VACLAV HAVEL - a tribute from F. W. de Klerk - Honorary Chair, The Prague Society for International Cooperation

The F W de Klerk Foundation would like to pay tribute to the late Václav Havel, the first President of the Czech Republic , who died yesterday. Václav Havel was one of the foremost founders of the new Europe, based on freedom and democratic values and retained a keen interest in the promotion of human and political rights after he left office. He played a courageous and indispensible role in the liberation of the Czech people from decades of communist totalitarianism and, in so-doing, contributed to the collapse of communism throughout East and Central Europe. He was also a leading European intellectual, playwright and literary figure.

F W de Klerk deeply admired President Havel and regularly participated in the Forum 2000 discussions that he initiated.

The Foundation would like to take this opportunity to express its condolences to President Havel’s family and friends - and to the entire Czech people.

Atlantic Eye: Jack Layton – “hope is better than fear”
Victoria, British Columbia, Aug 23, 2011 – The Leader of Canada’s Official Opposition, Jack Layton, has died at 61.

I had met Layton when he was still a member of the Toronto City Council in the early 90’s. He was thoughtful, rudite, engaging, intellectual and humanitarian – an activist consumed by environmental public policy.

Jack was passionate about everything.

He should have been the Prime Minister of Canada. But it was not to be.

On January 23, 2006, the morning of the then Canadian federal elections, before I got my own Atlantic Eye column, UPI published one of my last columns as an Outside View Commentator. In the column titled, Jack Layton Who?, I predicted that NDP leader Jack Layton would be the big election spoiler.

Atlantic Eye: Honoring Jan Zajic in Vitkov
Vitkov/Ostrava, Czech Republic, March 5, 2011 – An early Friday morning in Prague, February 25, 2011.
I was on my way to Vitkov, the birthplace of Jan Zajic, to participate in a ceremony honoring him. Zajic was one of the students – Jan Palach is the better known – who immolated himself to protest the August 1968 Soviet/Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia.
42 years ago on this day Jan Zajic valiantly took his life.
He was only 18.
I waited for Martin Janas, in his early 20's and Zajic's nephew, at Prague's main station. The station is being modernized. Something which is long overdue. The Communists spitefully built a hideous highway in front of the old station. This too will change over the next years.

Atlantic Eye: Boris Pankin's 100 days
Prague, Feb 21, 2011 – “Marc,” Boris Pankin bellowed at me as I turned around on one of Prague's side streets. “Yes, Mr. Ambassador,” I responded, walking towards him. “Valentina says you have sympathetic eyes. We are happy to join you for dinner.”

So began my deep friendship in November 1998 with Boris D. Pankin, who served as Soviet Foreign Minister in her waning days.

Yesterday, Boris Dimitrievich turned 80.

On that cool Prague day in 1998, Pankin and I had been co-panelists at a conference on NATO. I argued strongly for the alliance. He argued for a different security parameter. One year later, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland would join.
